A Perfect Day at The Village at Winona Lake
The Village at Winona Lake is one of my favorite places in Northern Indiana for a relaxed afternoon of shopping, coffee, and wandering.
Located just outside of Warsaw (about 35 minutes from Columbia City), it has the perfect balance of local charm and walkability without feeling overwhelming or crowded. The village sits along a beautiful canal near Grace College, with tree-lined streets, fountains, and beautifully landscaped paths that make it easy to spend an entire afternoon exploring.
What makes this area especially fun is that many of the shops are tucked inside charming houses along the canal, giving the entire village such a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
Start at The River Coffee
I always park behind The River Coffee House, which has plenty of parking and ends up being the perfect starting (and ending) point for the day.
Get lunch and a drink at The River, a cozy café with a relaxed college-town and lake-life atmosphere. They have a hearth oven where they make delicious pizzas, along with paninis and plenty of drink options.
If the weather is nice, sit outside and enjoy the fresh air. Inside, the atmosphere is warm and inviting—one of those places where you want to linger awhile.
We visited on a Saturday during the farmers market, which was happening just across the street. It was busy, but such a fun atmosphere. If you can, plan to spend a little time browsing the market too. You’ll find fresh sourdough bread, flowers, soaps, and other locally made goods.
Stop Into Rocket Fizz
Just across the parking lot is Rocket Fizz, a candy lover’s dream.
My kids absolutely love this place because it’s packed wall-to-wall with every kind of candy imaginable, along with unique sodas and tons of saltwater taffy.
Walk Along the Canal Shops
After leaving Rocket Fizz, head out the front door and start walking along the canal.
This is easily my favorite part of the village. The street is lined with adorable homes that have been converted into local boutiques and specialty shops.
As you walk, you’ll pass:
a specialty olive oil shop
a bicycle shop
a small market
Stop at Mucky Duck, a charming gift shop that always smells amazing the second you walk in.
Next, stop by:
The Beaded Peacock for jewelry and beads
the local wine shop nearby
Then continue down to BeLove, which is probably my favorite store in the entire village. The atmosphere inside is beautiful and peaceful, and the shop is filled with thoughtfully curated décor, gifts, antiques, and unique finds.
Don’t Miss Letterwood & Forage Ahead
From BeLove, turn toward the main street and make your way to Letterwood, another must-visit shop.
This store is filled with beautiful stationery, notebooks, puzzles, and thoughtfully curated gifts. The owner is incredibly friendly, and right next door is Nine Pines Apothecary, a wonderful bath and body shop filled with soaps and lotions that smell absolutely incredible.
Before leaving, make sure to find Forage Ahead, a tiny plant shop tucked behind one of the buildings inside a little shed. It’s slightly hidden, but completely worth finding.
End the Afternoon Slowly
The village also has:
a pottery painting studio
a portrait studio
and a fun little ice cream shop on the corner
Eventually, you’ll find yourself right back where you started at The River Coffee House—making it the perfect spot to grab an iced coffee before heading home.
Other Places to Check Out
If you have extra time, these are also worth visiting:
Cerulean Restaurant (great sushi)
Cloud 9 Sporting Goods
The Lakehouse Surf Shop
Winona Mercantile
Boathouse Restaurant
Final Thoughts
The Village at Winona Lake is one of those places that feels easy to enjoy. Between the canal walks, cozy coffee shops, and thoughtfully curated boutiques, it’s the perfect spot for a relaxing afternoon without needing a full weekend away.
It’s charming, walkable, and full of little hidden gems—which is exactly the kind of place I always love coming back to.
