The Perfect Weekend in Charleston, South Carolina

Intro

If you’re looking for a charming, walkable city filled with history, beautiful architecture, and incredible food, Charleston is one of those places that truly lives up to the hype.

This trip was part of a tradition I share with my best friend—every other year, we pick a new city to explore together. Charleston was our second trip (back in 2019), and it ended up being one of our favorites.

From historic homes and cobblestone streets to rooftop drinks and unforgettable meals, here’s exactly how to spend a perfect weekend in Charleston.

Where to Stay

We stayed at The Meeting Street Inn, located right in the heart of Charleston’s historic district.

The location couldn’t be better—you’re within walking distance of quite a bit, and the inn itself has so much character. It’s designed in the style of a traditional Charleston single house and includes a wine and cheese hour in the evening and breakfast in the morning.

There may even be a haunted room or two…

Friday

Start your weekend with lunch at Jestine’s Kitchen, a classic Southern spot known for fried chicken, mac and cheese, and other Lowcountry favorites.

Note: Jestine’s has since closed, but for a similar casual Southern experience, Virginia’s on King is a great option in the same area.

After lunch, head to The Vendue for rooftop drinks—an easy and scenic way to kick off your time in the city.

From there, join a walking tour to explore Charleston’s rich history. It’s one of the best ways to get your bearings and learn more about the architecture and stories behind the city.  Charleston History, Homes, and Architecture Guided Walking Tour.

Spend some time wandering—stop by the Pineapple Fountain, explore the historic graveyards, and take in the beauty of the live oaks throughout the city.

For dinner, we originally went to Fuel for tacos and margaritas and ended up catching a trivia night with locals, which made the experience even more fun.

Fuel has since closed, but for a similar lively, casual vibe, try Pink Bellies, which offers a modern Southeast Asian menu.

Saturday

Start your morning with breakfast at Poogan’s Porch, a Charleston staple with classic Southern dishes in a historic home setting.

Afterward, walk through the Charleston City Market, then take a historic house tour to get an up-close look at the city’s architecture and history.

Make your way down to The Battery, one of the most iconic areas in Charleston, and spend some time exploring the surrounding streets.

For lunch, head to Husk, known for its focus on Southern ingredients and seasonal dishes.

In the afternoon, visit Rainbow Row and continue exploring the surrounding neighborhoods. Charleston is incredibly walkable, and simply wandering is one of the best parts of the experience.

For dinner, make a reservation at Magnolias, a well-known spot for elevated Southern cuisine.

End your night with a haunted walking tour—a fun and slightly eerie way to experience Charleston after dark.  Charleston Ghost Tours

Final Thoughts

Charleston is the kind of city that feels both relaxed and full at the same time. Between the food, the history, and the beauty of the neighborhoods, it’s easy to see why so many people love it.

If you enjoy walkable cities, great restaurants, and a mix of history and charm, Charleston is absolutely worth adding to your list.
