How to Spend a Perfect Day in Roanoke, Indiana

Just under two hours from Indianapolis, Roanoke is one of those charming small towns that feels like it was made for a girls' day out. With walkable streets, locally owned boutiques, delicious food, and a great antique shop all right in downtown, it's an easy day trip that's absolutely worth the drive.

Start Your Morning at Waterfield Plaza Café

Begin your day with coffee at Waterfield Plaza Café, a beautiful coffee shop tucked inside a historic downtown building. The café feels special from the moment you walk in. It's surrounded by stunning local artwork (made from fabric rather than paint) and connected to the elegant Liberty Bookstore, making it easy to linger awhile.

Waterfield Plaza Café is the only coffee shop in Roanoke that brews coffee using Illy beans imported from Italy. Even their espresso machine has a story—it was handcrafted in Florence, Italy. If you love discovering unique coffee shops, this is a memorable place to start your day.

Take a Walk Through Downtown Roanoke

One of the things I love most about Roanoke is how easy it is to explore on foot. Once you've finished your coffee, step out onto Main Street and start browsing the thoughtfully curated shops that line downtown.

Your first stop should be Heartstrings Lather Up, a welcoming boutique filled with beautifully scented soaps, lotions, and self-care products. Next door, you'll find Lavender Valley, another local favorite that's worth popping into.

Continue around the corner to Paper Moon, a charming shop filled with gift ideas, home décor, and boutique clothing. It's the kind of place where you'll always find something you didn't know you needed.

Across the street, don't miss Saving Grace Vintage. If you love vintage furniture and unique home pieces, you'll enjoy browsing their carefully selected inventory.

As you continue your shopping loop along Main Street, you'll find even more local treasures. Ella Chic Boutique offers stylish clothing and accessories, while nearby shops include a kitchen store, an ice cream shop you'll want to save for later, and the well-known Joseph Decuis, a wonderful choice for a special occasion dinner.

I also stopped into Man Cave Collectibles because my son collects Star Wars toys, and I was curious to see what they might have for his upcoming birthday. Even if collectibles aren't your thing, it's a fun shop to explore.

Before moving on, grab a macaron from Proper Pastry. It's the perfect little sweet treat to enjoy while you continue wandering downtown.

The final stop on our shopping adventure was Snickel & Fritz, a fun candy and toy store packed with nostalgic treats and toys. My daughter was excited to find NeeDohs, and it was the perfect way to end our downtown shopping experience.

Lunch at Patio Pizza & BBQ

After a couple of hours of shopping, you'll definitely be ready for lunch.

Head back through Waterfield Plaza Café and out the rear entrance to Patio Pizza & BBQ. On a beautiful day, their outdoor seating area is the perfect place to relax and recharge.

The food was absolutely delicious. My daughter and I shared the BBQ platter, which included pulled pork, brisket, mac and cheese, and green beans. Our table also ordered fried green beans, one of my favorite appetizers, and they did not disappoint. Everyone loved their meal, making this an easy recommendation for your Roanoke itinerary.

Spend the Afternoon Treasure Hunting

No trip to Roanoke is complete without visiting the Vintage Shoppes at Roanoke, located inside the historic Old Coil Factory. If you love treasure hunting, plan to spend some time here.

The large space is filled with antiques, vintage finds, home décor, collectibles, and unique pieces from dozens of vendors. Whether you're searching for something specific or simply enjoy browsing, it's one of the most memorable stops in town.

End the Day with Ice Cream

Before heading home, stop by Jebi's Ice Cream Shoppe for one last treat.

I chose the Espresso Almond Fudge, and it was the perfect ending to the day. They make their waffle cones fresh daily and serve Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream from Madison, Wisconsin—one of my personal favorites.

It's the kind of sweet ending that makes you start planning your next visit before you've even left town.

Final Thoughts

If you're looking for a charming small-town day trip filled with local shops, great food, coffee, and plenty of treasure hunting opportunities, Roanoke deserves a spot on your list. Its walkable downtown, welcoming atmosphere, and collection of locally owned businesses make it an easy and memorable getaway from Indianapolis.

Whether you're planning a girls' day out, a mother-daughter adventure, or simply looking for somewhere new to explore, Roanoke is a hidden gem that's well worth the drive.
