A Girls' Weekend in Madison: One of Indiana's Most Charming Towns
If you're looking for a charming Indiana town for a fall girls' getaway, put Madison on your list.
We spent the weekend here celebrating my friend Katie's upcoming wedding, so our trip included some ridiculous bachelorette outfits and colorful wigs—but you definitely don't need a reason to celebrate to have an amazing weekend in Madison.
Between the historic homes, beautiful Ohio River views, locally owned shops, antique stores, coffee shops, great restaurants, and some of the friendliest people we've met on our travels, Madison quickly became one of my favorite Indiana towns I've explored.
Here's how I'd spend a long weekend in Madison, Indiana.
Thursday Night: Pizza & Check-In
If you can, arrive Thursday evening so you're ready for a full day of exploring on Friday.
Grab carryout from The Red Pepperoni before checking into your Airbnb. We ordered pepperoni and BBQ chicken pizza with breadsticks, and everything was delicious.
We stayed at The Attic Coffee Mill Cafe and Airbnb, a beautiful historic space right on Main Street. The location couldn't have been better for exploring downtown—and our Airbnb was directly above the coffee shop.
Honestly, could there be a more perfect location for me?
Unload your bags, break out the pizza, and settle in for the weekend.
Friday: Coffee, Golf Carts & Historic Madison
Start Friday morning downstairs at The Attic Coffee Mill.
This pretty little coffee shop has plenty of vintage charm and great breakfast sandwiches. Try the build-your-own panini with egg, bacon, and avocado, the avocado toast, or the breakfast burrito.
I ordered a cappuccino with caramel, and it was the perfect start to our first full day.
Explore Madison by Golf Cart
After breakfast, pick up a golf cart from Acree Alley Golf Carts.
This ended up being such a fun way to explore Madison.
Downtown is much larger than you might expect, so having a golf cart makes it easy to cruise between shops, admire the historic homes, stop at the Visitors Center, and make your way down to the Ohio River.
Don't miss the beautiful Broadway Fountain while you're exploring.
Since this was a bachelorette weekend, we decided Friday would also be our colorful-wig day. We drove around Madison in ridiculous wigs and bright outfits and somehow became minor local celebrities for the day.
People honked and waved, several asked to take pictures with us, and everywhere we went people wanted to know what we were celebrating.
It was ridiculous and so much fun.
Shops to Explore Downtown
Olde Tyme Marketplace, Ronnie’s Flowers, JTwist Living, Fountain Alley BodyCare, Madison Buy Sell Trade and many more!
One of the best parts of Madison is simply wandering Main Street and popping into whatever catches your eye, so leave yourself plenty of time to explore.
Lunch at Hinkle's
For lunch, head to Hinkle's Sandwich Shop.
This Madison institution has been serving the community since 1933 and is exactly the kind of local place I love finding while traveling.
Order a burger, onion rings, and a milkshake and settle into one of the booths.
We loved sitting among the locals. At one point, people walking by outside were tapping on the windows to wave at friends eating inside.
That pretty much sums up our experience in Madison—everyone seemed to know each other, and everyone was incredibly friendly.
Tour Lanier Mansion
Spend part of your afternoon touring Lanier Mansion State Historic Site.
The guided tour takes about an hour and gives you a glimpse into the family who once lived there, along with the home's historic furnishings, wallpaper, architecture, and beautiful grounds.
Even if historic house tours aren't normally at the top of your list, it's an interesting way to learn more about Madison's history.
Dinner at Off Broadway Taproom
For dinner, head to Off Broadway Taproom.
Their taco menu is fantastic. I'd recommend the Thai Chili Chicken and Sweet Potato tacos, and definitely start with the hot pretzel and fried green tomatoes.
Everything we ordered was delicious.
Another great dinner option is Red on Main, but I'd recommend making a reservation ahead of time.
Take a Haunted Trolley Tour
If you're visiting during spooky season, end your evening with a Haunted Trolley Tour.
We had so much fun hearing the ghost stories and learning about some of Madison's haunted history. We had no idea this little river town had so many ghost stories!
If the haunted tours aren't running during your visit, take one of the regular trolley tours during the day instead. It's a fun way to see more of town while learning about Madison's history.
Saturday: Coffee, Antiques & the Riverfront
Start Saturday at The Red Roaster Coffee & Eatery.
Fun fact: The Red Pepperoni, Red on Main, and The Red Roaster are all owned by the same people!
The Red Roaster has a lively atmosphere and another fantastic Main Street location. Grab one of their homemade donuts, a cappuccino or latte, and a breakfast bagel sandwich before starting your day.
Visit the Farmers Market
Just around the corner in Lytle Park, you'll find the Madison Farmers Market.
It's a smaller market, but we found wonderful local vendors selling homemade soups, jams, breads, vegetables, flowers, pumpkins, and mums.
If you're visiting on a fall Saturday morning, it's an easy addition to your itinerary.
Spend the Morning Antique Shopping
Next, head to Lumber Mill Antique Mall.
This place is huge, so give yourself plenty of time to treasure hunt.
We spent a beautiful morning wandering through the booths, playing our favorite antique-shopping game of "If It's Under..." and just enjoying being together.
Even the view outside is worth stopping for. From the antique mall, you can see the Ohio River with the Kentucky hills rising on the other side.
Then head to Riverwest Antique Mall.
We instantly loved this one.
The booths were filled with beautiful vintage pieces, and the prices were great. I left with a gorgeous double-swan brass tray, a tiny Jadeite hen on nest, and a few other treasures.
There happened to be a poker run going on around town that weekend, and decorated golf carts kept streaming past the shop filled with people having the best time.
There was just this fun energy everywhere we went.
For lunch, head to Mad Love Eat + Drink, a fun music-themed restaurant downtown.
We sat outside since the weather was beautiful.
I ordered the chicken Caesar salad wrap with sweet potato fries, and our table shared another giant pretzel because apparently pretzels became the unofficial food of our weekend.
The lemon drop martini was also delicious.
Walk Along the River & Get Ice Cream
After lunch, slow down for a little while and walk along the Ohio River.
Stop at Chillbilly Treats and order the pineapple-strawberry twist Dole Whip.
This also happened to be a great place to watch all the decorated golf carts participating in the poker run, which provided plenty of entertainment while we ate our ice cream.
Before dinner, stop by Madison's Kindness Mural for a group photo.
After everything we'd experienced that weekend, it actually felt pretty fitting. One of the things that stood out most about Madison was how genuinely friendly everyone seemed to be.
Dinner & Live Music at Mad Paddle Brewstillery
We knew the band started at 8:00, so we arrived around 7:00 to get a good seat and order dinner.
We somehow ordered pretzel bites AGAIN, along with nachos, chicken tenders, and burgers. Everything was tasty, but the boozy root beer float may have been the most memorable drink of the night.
Stay for the live music, dance if you're in the mood, and enjoy your last night in town.
Once again, we ended up meeting so many friendly people and genuinely felt like we were part of the community for the evening.
Sunday: One Last Coffee Stop
Before heading home Sunday morning, make one last coffee stop at Analog Coffee.
This coffee shop combines three things I love: coffee, books, and records.
I ordered the flatbread with ham, bacon, egg, cheese, and spinach, and oh my goodness—it was so good. The bagel sandwiches were delicious too.
Their seasonal drink menu was especially fun during our fall visit, with drinks like the Practical Magic Latte and Casper Cold Brew.
We loved the whole vibe of this place, and it was exactly where I wanted to spend our final morning.
Final Thoughts
Madison completely won me over.
Yes, the historic downtown is beautiful. The Ohio River views are gorgeous. There are fantastic coffee shops, antique stores, local restaurants, and more than enough shopping to fill an entire weekend.
But what I'll remember most is how much fun we had interacting with the people who live there.
From strangers waving at our ridiculous golf cart full of colorful wigs to people stopping to talk with us at restaurants, shops, and live music, Madison felt incredibly welcoming.
We came for a bachelorette weekend and left with a number of stories, antique treasures, inside jokes, and memories.
Whether you're planning a girls' getaway, celebrating something special, or simply looking for a charming Indiana town to explore this fall, Madison is absolutely worth the drive.
